Expressions of Interest: Actors
EDINBURGH FRINGE: interactive performance anyone?
***WHO WE ARE***
IMMI HQ creates interactive murder mystery installations. Most recently we performed ‘Death By Chocolate’ at the Melbourne (2007) and Adelaide (2008) Fringe Festivals to sold out audiences. For our trouble we’ve received The Age 2007 Melbourne Fringe Best Special Event Award, as well as reviews in major publications. For this, and other reasons, we’re taking the show to the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival (the largest arts market in the world).
***WHAT IS AN IMMI???***
IMMI stands for interactive murder mystery installation, which is a hybrid of art, entertainment, puzzle and game. Fully participatory, IMMIs are unique, highly stimulating and thought provoking interactive experiences. The theatrical aspect involves well rehearsed actors taking on the parts of suspects, while the audience takes on the role of detectives, for a 1.5 to 3 hour duration (continuous improvisation/performance). There is no script, but successful applicants will receive a detailed character description with wide permission to customise. For further information on IMMIs (the format, requirements, etc), please look through our website: immihq.com.
***WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR***
We’re looking for actors available to perform throughout August in Edinburgh, Scotland. You may live in Scotland, or you may be an Australian already planning to travel to the Fringe. We are open to audition people of all experience levels, and we’re seeking to find actors exceptionally strong at both improvisation and deep character work. All ages and nationalities are welcome, although for this show we’d prefer 18-50 year olds fluent in English (multi lingual applicants very welcome).
***WHAT WE’RE OFFERING***
This year the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is expected to showcase 2,500 events/comedians/etc. The annual festival attracts over 1000 talent scouts, and publishes an enormous number of reviews. We’re offering successful applicants exposure to this, the largest arts market in the world, and all the potential opportunities that entails. In terms of finances, Edinburgh is incredibly expensive, and while we could advertise these roles as profit share, to break even at EFF is an extraordinary achievement. Thus, we’re looking for people willing to perform for the potential exposure, for the challenge of our exciting interactive medium, and for the chocolate (yes, you’ll certainly be paid in chocolate).
***PERFORMANCE DETAILS***
Venue: Zoo Southside (the cabaret bar)
Time: 6pm performance, 90 minute show, cast call from 1+ hour prior
Dates: (TBC) Wed-Sun, August 1-25
Please do not apply if you are not available to perform in Edinburgh in August. It is also expected that actors are available for advertising the show outside of performance times.
***REHEARSAL DETAILS***
Rehearsals will be 1-3 times per week from mid June till late July in either Australia (if it is a full Australian cast who are planning to be in Australian during this period) or Edinburgh (in all other circumstances). The exact rehearsal schedule/time will be dictated by the availability of the selected cast.
***THE AUDITION***
Auditions will take place in May/June (Australia) and early-mid June (UK). They consist of a half hour slot per person, and are one-on-one. You will, in quick succession, perform all the roles applicable to you. You will jump into each part, and improvise the answers to the questions asked of you by the detective (casting assistant); aka “Hot Seat”. Only a brief description of each role will be given, as it appears below. Further information about the auditions is available upon request.
***THE ROLES***
All roles are equal (there are no leads and extras). Some of the parts are interchangeable (male/female). All are suspects. In order of audition:
Ivanna Noe – big fake smile, talkative, celebrity gossip guru (writes a regular column for a newspaper/mag as one of her occupations). Desperately superficial.
Flo Tway – severely introverted/shy. She thinks before she speaks, is very cautious in what she says, and is very observant. She won’t be rushed. She is deliberate, thoughtful and elusive.
Amanda Kullmien – obsessive, borderline hysterical-obsessive. Frets about topics, overthinks, talkative, possessive, gets wrapped up in her world of obsessions (she has a number of them). Commonly prattles/rambles/fixates.
Abby Trois – passionate. Outgoing. Heartfelt. Proactive. She fights for what she sees is right and wears her heart on her sleeve.
Lauren / Pete – gruff, reserved, factual. Personal life kept personal. S/he is not monosyllabic. Could be described as an uncut diamond (but possibly without the precious stone element). S/he is practical, intelligent, and quick on her/his feet.
Tam / Tom – abrupt, impatient, stressed, tetchy. Manipulative seductress/tor. Slippery, slick.
Nancy / Jeffrey – a proud and highly independent wo/man. S/he was very active, but has recently become disabled, and now is faced with being entirely dependent on her/his caregiver (Ivan). S/he is not soppy nor aggressive; her/his pride borders on hubris.
Huw Gleep – total bastard. Unashamed jerk. Sexist, racist, homophobic, self-righteous, condescending, patronizing, highly confident, arrogant.
Ivan Nanseer – socially awkward. Has a lot on his mind. Nervous perfectionist, focused on getting it right. Tries very hard. He is the only person not here for the singles night – he is here as Nancy/Jeffrey's caregiver.
Drew Aztar – flirtatious. Openly sexual (bi-sexual); charming. Good humour, easy to get along with, easy to chat with, highly charismatic, courteous, engaging – but unquestionably flirting (someone you'd want to be swooned by; not sleazy).
The Victim: AJ Oak, a nice guy / boy next door type. We will require someone to play AJ for the purpose of rehearsal (only) with participation in a production/supervisor role during performances if desired.
The Setting: a chocolate-themed, singles night (well, afternoon).
