4 male actors - aged from mid 20's
4 female actors - aged from mid 20's
This hilarious play centers on a voluble cleaning woman who keeps
telling the cops how to mind their business and who steps forward with
the right evidence in every pinch. She lives in the basement of the
office building she cleans and one night finds a body. By the time the
police arrive, there is no body and no evidence. The wrong alarms are
sent out, murdered men turn up alive, and the whole thing is chalked up
to the cleaning woman's imagination until an unidentified body is
discovered on a distant hill and the cleaning woman uncovers more
evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company owner staging his
own murder? Or did he kill his wife's lover? Is the lover a firm
employee or someone else? Where do the two female assistants fit in?
What is the wife withholding?
Mrs Piper - 40 - 60 ish, (has been played by Irene Handl) interfering, knows everyones business, not as stupid as she looks, cockney, gossiper, doesn't miss a trick.
Detective Superintendent Baxter - 40 - 60 ish, come up in the world, was 'friendly' with Mrs Piper 20 years prior, has thought he has left his old life behind, doesnt suffer fools, is impatient, gets very frustrated, imposing, likes to always be in control.
Detective Constable Goddard - 25 - 50, cultured, single, dedicated, honest, a bit of cheek about him (similiar to Lewis on Inspector Morse) - but bring your own flavour to the role
Mr Westerby - mid 30's ish, tall, good looking, nervous, highly strung
Miss Selby - 30 - 45 ish, the bosses private secretary, prompt, efficient, in love with the boss, nicely groomed - I imagine her with her hair pulled tightly back, glasses and a skirt suit.
Vicki Reynolds - 20 - 30, office junior, she is the typist, sweet kid, in lust with Westerby, gossipy, always last to arrive in the office, doesnt get much work done when she is there.
Claire Marshall - 35 - 45, the bosses wife, chic, cultured, very well groomed, very attractive, ignored by her workaholic husband, finds attention outside of the marriage, I think she feels like a trophy wife.
Mr Marshall - 40 - 60, the boss, rude, obnoxious, no-one likes him, jealous, expects too much from his workers, he has sacrificed his family life and expects everyone else to as well.
