Joondalup Encore Theatre Society is calling for actors between the ages of 16yrs and 60yrs to audition for roles in the comedy play “The Reluctant Debutante”
Play synopsis, performance dates will be July school holidays 2007
Set in London in the 1950's in the height of the "debutante season",
Upper class family Jimmy and Sheila Broadbent go to London with their 17-year-old daughter, Jane, who Sheila insists on making Jane a debutante - an idea Jane loathes. Jane's apathy to being placed on the marriage block, the determined efforts of Sheila's cousin Mabel to sabotage Sheila's efforts, and an unsupportive husband who just wants his sleep, make for a laugh a minute when the very person that Sheila doesn't want Jane to be with, is in fact the only one that she is interested in.
A really nice light-hearted fast paced comedy that presents a series of misunderstandings and innuendo's, that has chunky roles for each of the cast members. Always a crowd pleaser The Reluctant Debutante has been made into a movie of the same name with Rex Harrison and Kay Kendall, and more recently adapted into the 2003 movie "What a girl Wants" with Colin Firth and Amanda Bynes

Character synopsis;
Sheila has a lot to say… she is an elegant creature between 38-45, preferably tallish, she may appear shallow, but is very much a woman of her time. The wool can be pulled over her eyes, but mainly because she is too busy fussing about something, not because she is dense.
Jimmy her husband is in his late forties (or older) and is being dragged through the 'season' by Sheila in order to settle daughter Jane into society…as far as Sheila is concerned that means finding her a husband. Jimmy has an excellent relationship with Jane.
Jane is the Reluctant Debutante, a daddy's girl who delights in tripping up her mummy. She is respectful of her parents but has a strength of character that makes her quite mature and knowledgeable for her age. She should never be 'knowing' rather 'nicely rude'
Mabel is Sheila's cousin and her daughter Clarissa ages with Jane. Clarissa is desperate just to be left alone to her own devices, but cannot escape her mothers cocoon and therefore is a bit of a yes mummy, no mummy type of girl. Every now and then we see her shine, only to be squished and dragged along with Mabel's devious plans.
David Hoylake-Johnston has a straight part, that of a young man about town. He should have presence, poise and charisma, and David Bulloch appears to be 'doing' the season with one thought in mind…to bore everyone to death with the instructions on how to get to places they do not want to visit. His delivery should be quite dry and matter of fact.
Mrs Edgar is the maid; she has been with the family for years and is very comfortable with them. The part will expand a bit from the script as you see it, but she needs to be able to move about the stage 'doing her job' without upstaging what is going on, bringing her character to the fore
