The Cemetery Club By Ivan Menchell Directed by Judith Bedard Audition: Monday 23 October at 7:30pm About the Play: Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to the cemetery to visit their husband’s graves. Ida is sweet-tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt-stricken when this nearly breaks Ida’s heart. A funny, sweet, and moving play… CHARACTERS: All characters are 50+ The play requires actors who can either do Jewish American accent or who have a good ear for accents & are willing to learn it. IDA: Nice, sweet-tempered. Whilst she loved her late husband dearly, she is now beginning to feel the need to move on. LUCILLE: Flirts outrageously and is quite eager to make up for those years spent in “marital captivity”… DORIS: She remains fiercely devoted to her late husband and takes her responsibilities as a widow seriously. SAM: A widower, he’s charming and good-looking, but is a bit awkward and clumsy at trying to navigate the uneasy territory of the dating scene. MILDRED: A glamorous and slightly younger widow. She’s Sam’s date when they are all invited to a wedding.
