Character Descriptions
Basil Fawlty (Hotel Owner/Manager Male Aged 30+)
Basil’s tall and slender; this is a very physical role. He’s the Owner/Manager of Fawlty Towers Hotel; Basil has been married to Sybil for fifteen years. He believes that he’s superior to everyone; this is an unjustified belief. Basil also believes that the hotel guests are an unnecessary annoyance; that interfere with the smooth running of the hotel.
Sybil Fawlty (Basil’s Wife – Female Aged 30+)
Sybil is petite and is shorter than Basil. She’s been married to Basil for fifteen years. It’s not really known what she actually contributes in running the hotel. She’s either talking to the Guests or on the telephone to her friend Audrey. Sybil is unfazed by Basil’s constant insults but she gives them back, as good as she gets.
Manuel Fernandez (Hotel Staff – Male Aged 20+)
Manuel’s shorter than Basil; be prepared Basil hits him a few times. Manuel’s employed by Basil because he works cheap. Manuel is a walking disaster and his poor command of English makes him a constant source of exasperation for Basil. Always keen to learn, Manuel's slavish devotion to Basil only succeeds in aggravating him further.
Polly Shearman (Hotel Staff – Female Aged 20+)
Widely acknowledged as 'the sensible one', Polly is also Basil's confidante. Polly has an impressive ability to think on her feet and often helps Basil out of some of his worst scrapes. Although strictly a waitress, Polly's duties seem to extend far beyond that, apart from working at Fawlty Towers Hotel, she is an Art Student.
Terry Smith (Chef – Male Aged 20+)
Terry’s the Chef at the Fawlty Towers Hotel; he speaks with a cockney accent. He once worked at Dorchester, the place not the hotel. He’s a smoker and doesn’t hold Basil in a very high regard. He believes that the hotel would fall apart without him and Polly.
Major Gowen (Resident of the Hotel – Male aged 60+)
The Major is usually to be found in the hotel bar or asking for the morning's papers, the Major is the hotel's longest-standing resident. Never understanding quite what is going on, he is constantly adding his own bizarre interpretations of the situation.
Miss Tibbs & Miss Gatsby (Residents of the Hotel – Females Aged 60+)
Miss Gatsby and Miss Tibbs are the other long-standing residents of Fawlty Towers Hotel. Despite frequent ill treatment from Basil, they both claim to be satisfied with the hotel, at one time defending Basil against the other guests.
Mr. Carnegie (Public Health Inspector – Male Aged 25+)
Mr. Carnegie is carrying out an inspection of the Hotel, he’s a very officious man. He is quite intolerant to the state of the Hotel. All the Staff at the Hotel are hiding from him that a Rat named Basil is loose, finally resulting in him being offered the Rat to have with his cheese.
Mrs. Alice Richards (Deaf Hotel Guest – Female Aged 40+)
Mrs. Richards is a Hotel guest with a hearing problem but only when it suits her though. She’s quite arrogant and set in her ways. She believes that some money has been stolen from her room and blames the staff. As soon as Mrs. Richards meets Basil, she takes an instant dislike to him.
Mr. Taylor, Ronald, Mr. Yardley, Mr. Thurston, Mr. Firkins, Mr. Mackintosh & Guest (Hotel Guests – Males Aged 18+) Mr. Kerr (Man Delivering Vase – Male Aged 18+) Mrs. Taylor & Quentina (Hotel Guest – Female Aged 18+)
The above roles are minor speaking parts, ranging from Angry Hotel Guests to a Delivery Man. All these parts are very important to the plot of the show. Some of these roles may be doubled up with the Non-Speaking parts.
Male Guest (Hotel Guest – Male Aged 18+)
Female Guest (Hotel Guest – Female Aged 18+)
Taxi Driver (Mrs. Richards Taxi Driver – Male/Female Aged 18+)
The above roles are Non-Speaking Parts, some of these roles may be doubled up with the minor speaking Parts.
Communication Problems Synopsis
It’s not a wise man that entrusts his furtive winnings on the horses to an absent-minded geriatric Major, but Basil was never known for that quality. Parting with those ill-gotten gains was Basil’s first mistake; his second was to tangle with the intermittently deaf Mrs. Richards.
Basil the Rat Synopsis
Manuel insists that his pet rodent is a Siberian hamster. Basil is convinced that the pet shop has conned the gullible Spaniard and sold him a rat. This is a fine thing to have running round the hotel when the public health inspector is also on the loose.
