A U D I T I O N S

for our first Community Theatre Project for 2004 (our next Terry Pratchett production is scheduled for performances in JULY)

Since 1988, ARENA has produced over 125 Arts Projects, mainly in the sphere of Theatre For Schools. Our recent Community Theatre Projects include the Terry Pratchett productions WYRD SISTERS (2001), LORDS AND LADIES (2002), CARPE JUGULUM (2003), as well as DOCTOR WHO : HELLBLOSSOM (2002). We are now holding AUDITIONS for our first 2004 show.

TEMPORO is a futuristic tale of corporate intrigue, in which the boundaries of science are pushed beyond the fantastic and towards the sinister. TEMPORO is a spunky and accessible tale with touches of humour and romance, but which doesn't shy away from mind-expanding and even horrific science fiction extrapolations. This original local production takes place in an undefined time and place not dissimilar from our own, and will appeal to a wide audience of all ages (although younger audience members may need to cover their eyes during the scary bits!). Full of twists and turns, TEMPORO has been especially designed to appeal to regular and non-theatre-goers, including fans of such televisual fantasies as Buffy, The Matrix, Stargate and Doctor Who.

The cast will comprise the following . . . Ages specified are stage ages only, and can be flexible.

HILARY “HILL” MARTIN - Hill (female, 20s) has just joined Temporo as a recent university post-graduate who wrote her thesis on cybernetics. She is highly intelligent with an enquiring mind, but also has an easy-going nature, a balanced lifestyle and a good sense of humour. She is attracted to Syntax's sharp mind, scientific vision, and quick wit.

ROBERT “SYNTAX” COTTER - Syntax (male, 20s) is a geek and proud of it. His enthusiasm for his job as a programmer at Temporo makes the line between his work and social pursuits a little blurred (his only other interest being science fiction). Although outwardly confident and a master of repartee, Syntax lacks empathy and is emotionally shallow.

SUE McARDEL - Sue (female 20s-40s) is the only non-genius at Temporo (apart from Derek), and the most junior member of staff, as the office receptionist. However what she lacks in genius, she makes up for with a sassy, independent attitude, and enormous spirit. She and Syntax rub each other up the wrong way, but Sue soon strikes up a firm friendship with Hill.

SAMUEL ORTEGA - Ortega (male, 40s) is the brilliant but somewhat stuffy and imperial CEO of Temporo. He is forceful of will, single-minded, and does not suffer fools gladly. Although he and Syntax share a respect arising from their shared passion for the work, Ortega takes his staff for granted - as he also does his lover, Jania.

JANIA RAINE (female, 30s) is a colleague of Ortega who some years ago became his lover. She has grown apart from him however and begun a long-distance affair with Rico. For her own purposes, she maintains the pretense of being in love with Ortega. Jania is not quite as cruel as Ortega, but she is prone to abandon ethics in the pursuit of her goals.

RICO SADAMOTO (male, 30s) is a meek but brilliant neuroscientist at Temporo. Ortega tells his staff that Rico is on secondment from the firm's Japanese office, although in fact Rico's closest Japanese ancestor is is his grandfather. Rico's work rules his life, and he takes little care of his physical appearance. He is infatuated with Jania, and somewhat intimidated by her.

SAMUEL ORTEGA 2 (male, 40s) is Samuel Ortega in a different body.

DEREK (male, 30s), is introduced as Ortega's brother. Although they do not appear to be physically related, he does share a number of physical and verbal mannerisms with his brother (such as "good, good"). Derek is schizophrenic, so little that he says makes any sense. He is unpredictable, but not evil. He performs menial work at Temporo.

JEANNE O'DONNELL (female, 20s), is another brilliant employee of Temporo, specialising in the interface between the human brain and the virtual reality simulation systems developed by Syntax. She does not however overlook the human impacts of the company's research. She is idealistic but not naive, and she values the friendship of her colleagues.

AUDITIONS will be held on SUNDAY 8th FEBRUARY and MONDAY 9th FEBRUARY.

PERFORMANCE SEASON is 7th to 10th and 14th to 17th APRIL, 2004, at THE SUN ROOM in Maylands.
