Play Right is delighted to announce this month’s upcoming auditions for our next production Suburban Shakespeare, to take place in March 2004. Shakespeare would have laughed to know the elitist intellectual status his plays have attained in the modern theatre world – he wrote them for a rowdy mass audience who had come to have a good time, and that’s just what he gave them! Dashing sword fights, touching love scenes, heart-wrenching tragedies and wildly hilarious comedy – these plays weren’t written to be studied, they were written to be performed; and they weren’t written to be performed to an esoteric aristocracy, they were written for the people!
Suburban Shakespeare is all about playing the Bard as he was meant to be played - relevant, understandable, and above all, entertaining! The show will consist of a wide variety of scenes from the most popular plays to the least known, and from the uproariously funny to the poignant, and the idea is to perform them in interesting and creative ways to make them directly accessible to the audience, whether theyÂ’re long-time Shakespeare fans or tentative newcomers.
