A brief synopsis: Tom and Amy Bates are struggling to keep their middle-class conservative lives together whilst caring for their bed-ridden, handicapped, daughter Pattie. The stress of full-time care is taking its toll on them, and into this household enters Martin Taylor- who purports to be a college friend of PattieÂ’s. But is Martin really all he seems to be?

The characters in brief:

Tom Bates Mid- 50Â’s, very conservative, typically middle-class Englishman. Frustrated by his home life, and a deteriorating society, Tom is embittered by everything around him, but is not one to rock the boat. His spirit is broken, his faith lost, and there are skeletons in his closetÂ…

Amy Bates TomÂ’s wife, similar age. Again very conservative but longs for a more liberated, less closeted existence. Having spent two and a half years caring for Pattie she is at her witÂ’s end; stuck in a hostile marriage, keeping a firm grasp to her faith in God, but with no light at the end of the tunnel. She is looking for a release from her burden- and with the arrival of Martin she thinks that she finds it.

Patricia Bates Early to mid- 20Â’s. Stricken and bedridden, the audience initially regards Pattie with sympathy, however it becomes apparent that her utterances and outbursts reflect, and sometimes affect, the mood of the household. Pattie is the audienceÂ’s window into the psychological profiles of those around her- all the more poignant as they cannot read this themselves.
NB: This is by far the most demanding role in the play- technically, emotionally and physically. Whilst there may not appear to be much “dialogue”, there will be “homework” and research required for this role.

Martin Taylor Mid to late- 20Â’s. A seemingly pleasant young man who is finely attuned to the BatesÂ’ differing weaknesses, and exploits them to his own benefit. His motives are a mystery, but his actions have great ramifications. He goes from angelic to demonic and back at the drop of a hat.

Auditionees will be required to present a monologue of their own choosing (any genre, as long as it shows what you can do) , and will be asked to read selections from the play. Those auditioning for Patricia will not be asked to read from the play, but will be put through a more physical audition (movement) and given more “introspective” improvised scenarios to work with. Wear comfy clothing, guys!!
