You've all seen the movie...WELL THE PLAY'S EVEN BETTER!
Blak Yak Theatre is calling on Perth actors/actresses to audition for their first production for 2003, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This play, based on Ken Kesey's classic novel, provides a great challenge and plenty of juicy characters to sink your teeth into.
The season will take place in late March or early April (exact dates to be confirmed early January).
The list of characters is as follows:
Aide Turkle - age 55-70, an aging, African-American aide with a taste for the finer things in life.
Aide Warren - age 25-35, a cruel young aide with a particular dislike of McMurphy.
Aide Williams - age 25-35, Warren's shadow, a nervous young man.
Billy Bibbit - age 20-30, An 'acute' patient. A fragile young man with a severe stutter and 'mummy' issues.
Candy Starr - age 20-25, McMurphy's girl. The name says it all.
Cheswick - age 30-50, an 'acute' patient. His manner is alternately cringing and truculent. He is strongly influenced by McMurphy.
Chief Bromden - ALREADY CAST. A 'chronic' patient. A huge, seemingly catatonic American-Indian.
Dale Harding - age 35-50, an 'acute' patient. President of the Patient's Council, he has issues with his beautiful wife and is quite possibly gay. He is in opposition to McMurphy.
Dr. Spivey - age 45-55, the resident psychiatrist. An unimposing man, with ulcers...he doesn't like to make waves.
Martini - age 30-50, an 'acute' patient. A little, Italian schizophrenic. Sweet, innocent and hilarious.
McMurphy - age 30-40, a 'wild card' committed by the state. The state of his mental health is debatable. Turns the ward upside-down. (Please note: NO JACK NICHOLSON IMPERSONATIONS)
Nurse Flinn - age 18-22, sweet, innocent, young nurse tries her best to hold her own with the patients.
Nurse Ratched - age 30-45, the charge nurse. A disciplined woman who has the patients in the palm of her hand. Evil with the best intentions.
Sandra - age 20-25, Candy Starr's friend. Up for anything.
Scanlon - age 35-45, an 'acute' patient. Aggressive and anti-social. He is constantly making, '...a bomb, to blow up the whole damn world'... 'nuff said.
A Technician - Operates the electro shock machine.
All those auditioning are asked to prepare a monologue which best displays their strengths. They will also be provided with a piece/s for the characters they are interested in at the audition.
Auditions will be held on Saturday the 4th of January from 10am onwards. There will be another session from 7pm on Wednesday the 8th for those who can't make Saturday.
