The Shoe-horn Sonata was written to commemorate 50 years since the end of WW2. It was the winner of the 1995 Australia Remembers National Play competition, and the 1996 winner of the NSW Premier's Literary Awards - Australia's largest playwriting prize with the author donating all prize money to the building of a memorial to Australian nurses killed during the war.

"I do not have the power to build a memorial so I wrote a play instead" - John Misto.

In 1945 Sheila and Bridie were freed from a Japanese POW camp deep in the jungles of Sumatra where thousands of women and children had lived and died virtually forgotten by their own governments. Now, after being separated for half a century, the filming of a television documentary forces them to relive the past, contact the present and question the future. Woven into their fifty years of separation are a shoe-horn and the threads of loyalty and love which form their 'uncommon bond'.

The play is a two-hander with two superb roles for women in their mid to late 60's. Because of the size of the roles, auditions are being held earlier than usual. There is a third role of a male voice, but this role has been filled.

The characters are:

Bridie:

Australian, outspoken and tough with a warm, generous heart.

Sheila:

English, guarded and emotional but with a feisty spirit.

Auditions will be held on Sunday 15th December only. No appointment is necessary.

The season will run from 24th April 2003 to 10th May 2003 (including ANZAC Day)
